Test your Accountant
It’s time you asked yourself the question…
Are you really sure that you’re getting the best accounting support possible? You know, the good stuff that will take you from where you are now to where you want to be?
Now is always the time to challenge your assumptions, or even do something about the thoughts that have been nagging at you. So here’s our five-point checklist that will help you fi8ure out if you’re secretly on the side of a transactional accountant, rather than a transformational one!
Honestly, how often do you actually see your accountant? Is it enough to feel confident that you’re making the best financial decisions as they’re needed? And when you’re actually in front of them, are you starting to notice their eyes are looking a little glazed over..?
Do you truly understand what your annual financial statements and tax returns mean? Do they paint a clear picture for you so that you’re confident explaining them, for example when you deal with your bank? Wouldn’t you rather understand the colourful story of your business using the numbers, rather than see it as a ‘dark art’?
How accessible is your accountant? Do you have a relationship where you feel comfortable talking to them whenever you need their help, and do they offer a sounding board, or challenge you? Crucially, do they actually respond to you when you put up the bat signal?
Does your accountant relate to your business, and does theirs inspire you too? Have they actually stood in your shoes, and walked the walk to create a successful business themselves? Now you think of it, do they actually have an air of superiority as ‘all-knowing higher beings’ when dealing with you?
When you have a question, does your accountant answer you properly? Do you feel like they hear where you are coming from, and give you the guidance you need in actual English-sounding words? When they don’t know something tricky, do they tell you that, or do they fudge some answer that you’re not really convinced of?
